Beyond the immediate environmental, health, and quality of life benefits they provide, natural gas trucks also help reduce our dependence on foreign oil and move us toward the era of the hydrogen fuel cell — possibly the ultimate sustainable, pollution-free, and renewable fuel and power source.

The Trentonian, a New Jersey newspaper, announced their plans to make their trash collection a little environmentally cleaner with the adoption of natural gas fueled trucks. Here’s the article:

“HAMILTON — Mayor John Bencivengo today will announce that Hamilton Township is the first municipality in the state to implement a clean-energy initiative with its garbage collection.

Garbage collection has traditionally been carried out by diesel-fueled trucks, but as of today, Hamilton’s trash will begin being picked up by natural gas trucks, according to Frank Fiumefreddo Jr., the owner of Central Jersey Waste and Recycling.

The township last year awarded Fiumefreddo’s company a five-year contract to collect solid waste. Bencivengo wanted the township to adopt an environmentally friendly approach, so his administration required Central Jersey Waste and Recycling to eventually replace its diesel fuel trucks with trucks fueled by natural gas or 100 percent biodiesel.

“They wanted the cleanest trucks on the road,” Fiumefreddo told The Trentonian yesterday afternoon. Natural gas solid waste trucks have been on the market for a while, but their use in New Jersey has been nonexistent due to the lack of natural gas pumping stations, Fiumefreddo said.

To meet the township’s mandate, Fiumefreddo’s company built a natural gas pumping station in Trenton. He said his company is the first in New Jersey to build a natural gas plant for solid waste vehicles.

In addition to being cleaner than diesel, Fiumefreddo said, gas-powered trucks are also less noisy.

Fiumefreddo said he hopes that Hamilton taking the lead on clean-energy garbage collection will persuade the other towns in Mercer County to jump on the bandwagon.

Mayor Bencivengo is scheduled to announce this “significant environmental achievement” this morning at the township’s municipal building on Greenwood Avenue.”
