Barnett Shale is Top U.S. Natural Gas Field

The Barnett Shale was the No. 1 U.S. natural gas field in 2009, outproducing the San Juan Basin of New Mexico and Colorado for a second straight year, according to preliminary data from Steve Grape, a U.S. Energy Information Administration official in Dallas. Final figures are due in August, but preliminary data show that the Barnett grew while that San Juan declined. The Texas Railroad Commission says the Newark East Field — essentially the Barnett Shale — averaged 4.84 billion cubic feet per day in 2009, up from 4.40 billion in 2008.
